Hamlet Castle Tours: Day Trips to Kronborg Castle from Copenhagen

Most Hamlet Castle tours split on two things the titles do not show: how long you actually get inside Kronborg, and whether the castle ticket is already paid. Here every day trip from Copenhagen is set side by side on time at the castle, the other stops, entry fees and the rules that decide who can go.

Quick answer Our pick, the slow-paced option, the Sweden day and the private trips, in plain terms

If you want one clear answer, the pick is the small-group day that covers three sites, Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde, with all entrance fees in the price. It runs with 16 travellers or fewer in a minivan, it is rated 4.9 from 2,418 reviews, and it costs $169.39 per person. If stairs and speed worry you, the easy-pace day gives you about two guided hours at Kronborg with a slower rhythm. If you want Sweden too, the cheapest listing crosses to Lund and Malmö, but the catch is that Kronborg is a photo stop and no castle entry is included. Travellers who want Kronborg alone with a private guide should look at the 4-hour train trip, priced per group of up to 2. Private car options cover two or three castles with a driver, and one of them is wheelchair accessible. If you would rather go alone, the train from Copenhagen Central takes about 46 minutes and the castle is a 10-minute walk from Helsingør Station.

Key takeaways

Hamlet Castle Tours from Copenhagen

This is an independent comparison catalog, not a tour operator. We currently compare nine Hamlet Castle tours and day trips that reach Kronborg Castle in Helsingør from Copenhagen. Four are shared small-group or coach days: three castles in a minivan, four sites including the Viking ships, an easy-pace pair of castles, and a half day in Helsingør. One two-country day adds Lund and Malmö in Sweden. Three are private trips with a guide, a driver or both, and one is a guided e-bike ride along the Øresund coast. Rates start at $134.74 per person for the Sweden day. We read the listings, the official castle information and traveller reviews, and we never claim to cover the whole market.

How to Choose a Hamlet Castle Tour

A first visit with one day to spare

Take the three-site small-group day. It folds Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde Cathedral into about 9 hours by minivan, with every entrance fee in the $169.39 price and no more than 16 travellers. Kronborg is the first stop of three, so the time there is set by the guide, but you see the most for the money.

Read the full page for the Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde day trip.

Slow walkers and older travellers

The easy-pace day was built for you. It allows about two guided hours at Kronborg, then about three hours in Hillerød for Frederiksborg and lunch, at a rhythm of roughly 6,000 steps. Canes and folding walking frames are welcome, though there are still spiral stairs.

See the easy-pace Kronborg and Frederiksborg tour for the small print about small departures.

Adding Sweden

One listing turns the crossing into a two-country day, running from Helsingør by ferry to Lund and back from Malmö over the Øresund Bridge. The catch is plain: Kronborg is a stop with castle entry not included, and the commentary comes from a host-driver and an audio guide. It is the cheapest and most reviewed listing here.

Check the Hamlet Castle and Sweden day tour before you book, and note that passport details are needed.

Kronborg only, with a private guide

The 4-hour private trip is the only listing that does nothing but Kronborg. Your guide meets you for the train from Copenhagen, rides with you, and gives you 1.5 hours inside the castle. It costs $699 per group of up to 2, train tickets and castle admission included.

Details on the private Hamlet Castle tour by train.

A family or group that wants its own car

Two private car options fit. The chauffeur day covers Kronborg, a photo stop at Fredensborg and Frederiksborg in about 5 hours for up to 6 people, with hotel pickup. If you want a driver and a separate guide for the full story, the private Kronborg and Frederiksborg day runs about 7 hours and even provides infant seats.

Compare the North Zealand castles chauffeur tour with the private Kronborg and Frederiksborg tour.

Wheelchair users

One listing is marked wheelchair accessible, the private chauffeur tour, which carries you to the castles with a driver-guide. Be aware that Kronborg itself has many stairs and no elevator, so a vehicle that reaches the grounds is not the same as full access inside. Read what the North Zealand castles private tour states about access before booking.

Active travellers who want to ride

Ride an e-bike along the Øresund coast instead of sitting on a bus. The trip takes the train to Humlebæk, then follows the shore north through harbours and villages to the walls of Kronborg, 3.5 hours in all. Riders must be 14 or over and no heavier than 90 kg (198 lbs), and castle entry is not listed as included.

Tour or Train: Getting to Kronborg on Your Own

Kronborg is easy to reach without a tour. Trains run often, the walk from the station is short, and the ticket can be bought at the gate. The table shows where a guided day wins and where it does not.

The train is the simplest self-guided option. The Coastal Railway leaves Copenhagen Central Station for Helsingør about every 20 minutes and takes about 46 minutes. From Helsingør Station, Kronborg is a 10-minute walk along the harbour.

Buy the castle ticket online to save 10%.

Driving yourself

Take the E47 motorway north, about 45 to 50 minutes from Copenhagen. Public parking sits at Nordhavnsvej, a 5-minute walk north of the castle. It fills up around midday in summer, so arrive before 10:30 or after 14:00.

Who is better off on a tour

A tour earns its price if you want several sites in one day, a guide inside the rooms, or no logistics to think about. If you only want Kronborg, are comfortable with trains, and travel outside peak hours, going alone costs less and lets you stay as long as you like. The private Hamlet Castle tour by train sits between the two, with a guide but no bus.

How Much Time Do You Get Inside Kronborg?

This is the question most listings answer in small print. Some put you inside the castle for two hours with a guide. Others park outside and drive on.

Here is every listing, side by side.

One guided hour covers the main rooms: the Ballroom, the royal apartments and the chapel. Two hours, as on the easy-pace day, lets you add the casemates and the tower climb at your own pace after the guide finishes. If the tower and the view matter to you, favor the longer visits.

On three listings Kronborg is a stop rather than the visit. The Sweden day pauses in Helsingør on the way to the ferry, the e-bike ride ends at the walls, and the Helsingør city tour leaves you free time to enter or not. All three are fine days, but none of them gives you a guided hour inside.

The Great Ballroom inside Kronborg Castle, the room every Hamlet Castle tour walks through

Inside Kronborg Castle: What You Will See

The Ballroom

The Ballroom measures 62 by 12 meters and was the largest hall in Northern Europe when it was completed in 1582. The walls carry a series of large paintings made from 1618 to 1631 for Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen.

The royal apartments and the Little Hall

The royal apartments occupy the first floor of the north wing. The Little Hall holds seven tapestries from a series of forty, commissioned by Frederick II around 1580, showing one hundred Danish kings. Seven more hang in the National Museum of Denmark, and the rest are lost.

The chapel

The chapel was inaugurated in 1582 and was the only part of the castle untouched by the great fire of 1629. The army turned it into a gymnasium and fencing hall in 1785, and the original furniture went back in for its reinauguration in 1843.

The casemates and Holger Danske

Below the castle lie the casemates, dark vaulted passages under the walls. In them sits the statue of Holger Danske, Ogier the Dane, asleep with his arms folded. Legend says he will wake if Denmark is ever in danger.

The cannon tower and the view to Sweden

A cannon tower gives a view over the Øresund, which narrows to 4 km (2.5 mi) here. Helsingborg in Sweden sits on the far shore. This is why the fortress was built here in the first place, to collect tolls from every ship passing in or out of the Baltic.

Kronborg and Hamlet: Shakespeare's Elsinore

Kronborg is called Hamlet Castle because Shakespeare set his play here, in the town he called Elsinore, which is the anglicised name of Helsingør. The play was written around 1600, and Shakespeare probably never visited the castle. He is believed to have drawn on the legend of Prince Amleth recorded by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus in the 12th century.

Actors from his own troupe had performed at the court of Frederick II, and their stories may have supplied the setting. The castle's own account is at kronborg.dk.

Hamlet was first performed at Kronborg in 1816, by soldiers of the garrison, to mark the 200th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The tradition became regular from 1937. The castle has since hosted Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, John Gielgud, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale and Jude Law.

The castle itself leans into the connection. It runs a 45-minute English tour called In Hamlet's Footsteps, and a 45-minute tour called The Secrets of Kronborg with special registration. Free 15-minute introductions run several times a day, which is worth knowing if you arrive on your own by train.

Frederiksborg, Roskilde and the Other Stops

Frederiksborg Castle

Frederiksborg stands in Hillerød, a Renaissance castle on three islands in the castle lake, and houses the Museum of National History. It opens every day from 10:00 to 17:00. Adult admission is 125 DKK ($18.76), children 0 to 17 enter free, and Copenhagen Card holders enter free.

Five listings pair it with Kronborg. Details at frederiksborg.dk.

Fredensborg Palace

Fredensborg is a Baroque palace built in the early 18th century for King Frederick IV, and it is still the royal family's summer residence. Tours stop there for photos only. Both the chauffeur day and the Helsingør city tour include the stop.

Roskilde Cathedral

Roskilde Cathedral is the burial church of almost all Danish monarchs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two listings stop here, one for a 50-minute guided visit. Roskilde was the royal capital before Copenhagen.

The Viking Ship Museum

The museum on Roskilde Fjord shows five original Viking ships and reconstructions, with a working boatyard. It opens every day, from 10:00 to 17:00 from 1 May to 18 October and 10:00 to 16:00 in winter. Admission is 165 DKK ($24.76) at the door, 130 DKK ($19.51) online, and under 18s enter free.

See vikingeskibsmuseet.dk for the current schedule.

Lund and Malmö in Sweden

The two-country day crosses the Øresund by ferry and returns over the bridge. In Sweden it stops at Lund Cathedral, completed in 1145, with old streets behind it lined with houses from the 1700s, and gives shopping time in Malmö, Sweden's third largest city. Remember that this listing does not include entry to Kronborg or any castle.

Guide, driver-guide or audio guide

Four kinds of commentary appear across the catalog. A live guide walks you through the rooms, as on the three-site day and the private train trip. A driver-guide drives and narrates, which is how the easy-pace day, the four-site day and the chauffeur tour work.

The private van day is the only one with a driver and a separate guide. Audio guides carry the commentary on the Sweden day and the Helsingør city tour.

Per-person or per-group pricing

Shared days price per person, from $134.74 to $218. Private trips price per group. The train trip costs $699 for up to 2, the chauffeur day $1,006 for up to 6, and the private van day $1,416.70 for your group.

Split the private prices across your party before comparing them with the shared rates: the train trip works out at $349.50 each for a couple, and the chauffeur day at $167.67 each with a full car of six.

Kronborg Castle Tickets and Opening Hours

An adult ticket at the castle costs 150 DKK ($22.51). Buying online costs 135 DKK ($20.26), a 10% saving. Children enter free.

The day ticket stays valid for 1 year after purchase, so an unused ticket is not money lost. Kronborg is also on the Copenhagen Card attraction list. Full details are at kronborg.dk.

  • Winter, from early January to late March: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Mondays, but open every day during the February winter break
  • Spring to autumn, late March to 31 October: every day 10:00 to 17:00, including public holidays
  • November: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Mondays
  • Christmas season: Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00, weekends 10:00 to 17:00
  • Closed 24, 25 and 31 December

The ticket office sits in the yellow house after the first moat. Card payment is also taken at the red gate after the last moat. If you drive, the public car park at Nordhavnsvej fills up around midday in summer.

Helsingør Weather by Month

The chart gives the average afternoon high in Helsingør each month (Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, 2001-2025). The castle and the tours run all year. From late March to October Kronborg opens every day until 17:00, in winter it closes on Mondays and at 16:00.

Best Time for a Hamlet Castle Tour

Summer is the safest bet. July afternoons in Helsingør average a high of 21.3°C (70°F), and June gives about 17.5 hours of daylight. Kronborg opens every day until 17:00 from late March to 31 October.

The trade-off is rain: July and August are the wettest months, with 83 and 88 mm on average.

Winter is quiet and cold. January afternoons average about 3.1°C (37°F) with roughly 7.7 hours of daylight. The castle closes on Mondays and shuts at 16:00, so a half-day tour still works but the light goes early.

Pack a real coat, because the wind off the Øresund cuts through everything.

The shoulder months of May and September still have long days and milder weather. May averages 16°C (61°F) with 16.3 hours of daylight, and September 17.5°C (64°F) with 12.7 hours. Both months suit the e-bike ride and the walking-heavy days well.

Climate figures come from the Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, daily data for Helsingør from 2001 to 2025.

Children, Accessibility and Rules

Kronborg welcomes children, since entry is free for them, but the building itself is less forgiving. There are many stairs and no elevator, strollers are not allowed inside, and the cobblestones get slippery in rain. Read each listing's small print before booking, because the age and weight limits below are enforced.

  • Children enter Kronborg free of charge
  • The easy-pace day and the four-site day are both not suitable for children under 5
  • The e-bike ride requires riders aged 14 and over, with a maximum weight of 90 kg (198 lbs) and a minimum height of 158 cm (5 ft 2 in)
  • Kronborg has many stairs and no elevator, which makes it hard for wheelchair users
  • The North Zealand castles private chauffeur tour is the only listing marked wheelchair accessible, and Kronborg has accessible parking inside the grounds left of the red gate
  • Strollers and prams are not allowed inside the castle, bring a baby carrier instead
  • Large backpacks and luggage are not allowed inside, the cloakroom is free
  • The Sweden tour needs a valid passport on the day, and passport details at booking
  • The four-site day is not suitable for people over 140 kg (309 lbs)
  • The Helsingør city tour is not suitable for people over 70

Hamlet Castle Tours: Questions

How much is a Hamlet Castle tour from Copenhagen?

Shared day trips run from $134.74 per person for the Sweden day to $218 for the Helsingør city tour, with most between $150 and $169.39. Private trips cost per group, from $699 for up to 2 on the train trip. See the full comparison in the catalog of Hamlet Castle tours.

Is Kronborg the real Hamlet castle?

Yes in the sense that Shakespeare set Hamlet at Kronborg, in the town he called Elsinore. He probably never visited the castle himself and drew on an older Danish legend. The castle's own guides call it the home of Hamlet, and the play has been staged there since 1816. The full story: is Kronborg the real Hamlet castle.

How do I get to Kronborg Castle from Copenhagen?

The Coastal Railway runs from Copenhagen Central Station to Helsingør about every 20 minutes and takes about 46 minutes, then Kronborg is a 10-minute walk along the harbour. By car it is about 45 to 50 minutes up the E47, parking at Nordhavnsvej. Guided options are compared on the Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde day trip and the other tour pages. Every route compared: how to get to Kronborg from Copenhagen.

How long do you need at Kronborg Castle?

One guided hour covers the Ballroom, the royal apartments, the chapel and the casemates. Two hours, as on the easy-pace Kronborg and Frederiksborg tour, adds time for the casemates and the tower at your own pace. The honest verdict: is Kronborg Castle worth visiting.

Is the Kronborg ticket included in the tours?

On four listings yes, including the three-site day, the easy-pace day and the private train trip. On the Sweden day, the chauffeur tour, the e-bike ride and the Helsingør city tour, castle entry is not included and you pay on the day if you want it. Always check the inclusions box before booking.

Can you visit Kronborg and Frederiksborg in one day?

Yes, and five listings do exactly that. The easy-pace Kronborg and Frederiksborg tour gives about two hours at Kronborg and three hours in Hillerød, while the chauffeur version fits both into about 5 hours. Frederiksborg Castle opens every day from 10:00 to 17:00, so the pairing works most of the year. The two side by side: Kronborg or Frederiksborg.

Can you see Sweden from Kronborg Castle?

Yes. The Øresund narrows to 4 km (2.5 mi) at Helsingør, and the cannon tower looks straight across to Helsingborg in Sweden. The ferry crossing on the Hamlet Castle and Sweden day tour takes you across to the far shore.

Is Kronborg Castle open on Mondays?

Not from early January to late March or in November, when it closes on Mondays and opens 10:00 to 16:00. From late March to 31 October it opens every day, Mondays included, from 10:00 to 17:00. It also closes on 24, 25 and 31 December. Prices and the full calendar: Kronborg Castle tickets and hours.

Is Kronborg Castle suitable for wheelchairs and strollers?

The castle has many stairs and no elevator, so wheelchair access inside is poor, and strollers are not allowed in the building. Accessible parking sits inside the grounds left of the red gate, and the North Zealand castles private chauffeur tour is the one listing marked wheelchair accessible. Bring a baby carrier instead of a pram.

Did Shakespeare go to Denmark?

There is no evidence that he did. He probably never visited Kronborg and is believed to have based the story on the legend of Prince Amleth written down by Saxo Grammaticus in the 12th century. The castle's own explanation of who is Hamlet is worth reading before your visit.
