Royal Castles and Helsingør City Tour: Kronborg, Fredensborg and the Old Town
The Royal Castles and Helsingør City Tour: Kronborg, Fredensborg and the Old Town is a 5-hour shared coach trip from Copenhagen that costs $218 per person. You ride north through the forests of North Zealand, stop for photos at Fredensborg Palace and then get free time in Helsingør, the town the world knows as Elsinore. That free time is the heart of this Helsingør city tour. You choose how to spend it: enter Kronborg Castle, the real name of Hamlet Castle, walk the cobbled old streets and the harbour, or visit the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark. Kronborg entry is not included, which keeps the ticket simple but leaves the castle fee to you. The trip suits travellers who want a half day out of the city with room to wander, rather than a guided walk inside the castle walls. One honest edge: this is a new listing with no reviews yet, so nobody has scored it. If you would rather read what thousands of travellers thought first, HamletCastleTours.com puts every option side by side.

The deciding constraint first: the listing is not suitable for wheelchair users or people over 70. The fare is $218 per person for a shared group and the trip runs about 5 hours. Time at Kronborg is free time, not a guided slot. You can choose to enter the castle, and entry is not included, so budget $22.51 (150 DKK) at the gate or less online. You meet at Hotel Astoria, Banegårdspladsen 4, next to Copenhagen Central Station, and you pick the start time at checkout.

What the $218 Ticket Covers

Through the Deer Park to Fredensborg
The drive north is not dead time. The route runs through the forests of North Zealand and passes the Ermitage hunting lodge in the Jægersborg Deer Park, part of a UNESCO-listed hunting landscape.
The only scheduled stop before Helsingør is a photo stop at Fredensborg Palace. The palace was built in the early 18th century for King Frederick IV and it is still the royal family's summer residence. You photograph the Baroque palace and its grounds from outside.
Every listing on this site treats Fredensborg the same way, as a stop for photos only.
If you want to go inside a palace rather than photograph one, the North Zealand Castles Private Chauffeur Tour: Kronborg, Fredensborg and Frederiksborg adds Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, where the Museum of National History fills a Renaissance castle on three islands.
Free Time in Helsingør
Everything after the Fredensborg stop is yours to shape. The coach drops you in Helsingør and picks you up after your free time. The town celebrates 600 years as a market town in 2026, and the compact centre makes it easy to fill a couple of hours without a plan.
Three ways to spend it
- Enter Kronborg Castle, a 10-minute walk along the harbour from the station area
- Walk the cobbled streets such as Brostræde, St Mary's Church from 1430 and the harbour
- Visit the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, built into a former dry dock, or find the street food market at the old shipyard
Hunting for lunch is easy too. The castle has Café Sundtolden next to the shop, and you may eat a packed lunch in the Old Kitchens. In town, the street food market at the old shipyard is the obvious stop.

Photo stop
Fredensborg Palace

At Kronborg
Your choice in Helsingør
Free time in Helsingør. Enter Kronborg Castle, the Hamlet Castle of the plays, and see the Ballroom, the tapestries and the casemates, or take the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark in the old dry dock. Castle entry is not included in the fare.

Old town
Streets and harbour
If you skip the castle, the cobbled streets such as Brostræde, St Mary's Church from 1430 and the harbour all sit within a short walk. There is a street food market at the old shipyard for lunch.

Return
Back to Copenhagen
The coach collects the group and returns to Hotel Astoria. The whole trip runs about 5 hours from pickup to drop-off.

Kronborg or the Maritime Museum
Kronborg Castle stands at the narrowest point of the Øresund, where the strait is only 4 km (2.5 mi) wide and Sweden sits on the far shore. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the major Renaissance castles of Northern Europe. Shakespeare set Hamlet here, though he probably never visited, and the theatre tradition is real.
Hamlet was first performed at the castle in 1816 and regular performances have run since 1937, with names such as Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, John Gielgud, Kenneth Branagh and Jude Law on the list.
Inside the walls
The Ballroom measures 62 x 12 m and was the largest hall in Northern Europe when it was completed in 1582. The Little Hall holds seven tapestries from a series of forty showing one hundred Danish kings, commissioned by Frederick II around 1580. The chapel, inaugurated in 1582, survived the fire of 1629 that destroyed much of the rest.
Under the castle, the casemates hold the statue of the sleeping Holger Danske, who legend says will wake if Denmark is in danger, and a cannon tower looks across the strait to Sweden.
Practical details for your free time
The ticket office sits in the yellow house after the first moat, and card payment is also taken at the red gate after the last moat. Adults pay $22.51 (150 DKK) at the castle, or $20.26 (135 DKK) online, a 10% saving. Children enter free.
There are many stairs and no elevator. The castle also runs a 45-minute English tour called In Hamlet's Footsteps and free 15-minute introductions several times a day, so check times at the gate if you want a live guide.
The Maritime Museum is the other half of the choice. The M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark sits in a former dry dock and tells the story of Danish shipping, a good pick on a wet day or if you have seen enough castles this week.
For opening hours and ticket prices on the day, see the castle's own Kronborg visitor information.
Where the Tour Meets
The tour leaves from Hotel Astoria at Banegårdspladsen 4, beside Copenhagen Central Station.
Who This Tour Fits
This listing fits a specific traveller, and it is worth checking yourself against the profile before paying $218.
- You want a half day out of Copenhagen, not a full 9-hour day
- You like free time over a guide with a flag and a timetable
- You are happy to pay for castle entry yourself, or skip it for the harbour and the museum
- You want an audio guide in English, Italian or Spanish rather than one fixed live language
- You are 70 or younger and do not use a wheelchair, because the listing excludes both
The honest note first: this is a new listing with no reviews yet, so there is no rating history to lean on. It is a half day of free time in Helsingør with a photo stop at Fredensborg, not a guided visit inside Kronborg. If that trade sounds wrong, the Easy-Pace Kronborg Castle and Frederiksborg Palace Tour from Copenhagen gives you about 2 guided hours inside the castle with entry included for $150.

How It Compares
This listing is the only half-day shared option in the catalog that includes a Fredensborg photo stop, and the only one built entirely around free time in Helsingør. The trade-off is that castle entry is on you and there is no review history yet. Here is how it stacks up against the closest alternatives on price, length and what you actually get inside the castle.

Questions About the Kronborg & Helsingør City Tour
What's the best month to visit Denmark?
The listing runs in all weather, so the month matters less than your packing. Late spring through early autumn brings the longest castle hours, with Kronborg open every day 10:00-17:00 from late March to the end of October. Winter visits work too, but the castle closes on Mondays outside the summer season and shuts for a few days over the holidays.
What is there to do in Helsingør?
The main draw is Kronborg Castle, the UNESCO World Heritage fortress that Shakespeare used as the setting for Hamlet. Beyond the walls you have the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark in a former dry dock, St Mary's Church from 1430, cobbled streets such as Brostræde and a street food market at the old shipyard. The town is compact, so a half day of free time covers a lot of it.
Is Kronborg entry included on the Helsingør city tour?
No. Castle entry is not included in the $218 fare. You pay $22.51 (150 DKK) at the gate or $20.26 (135 DKK) online if you choose to go inside, and children enter free. Booking online is the cheaper route, so it is worth doing before the coach leaves Copenhagen.
Is the Helsingør city tour guided?
Partly. You get an audio guide in English, Italian and Spanish, plus a digital visitor kit and an ebook, and the listing notes a live tour guide. But the time in Helsingør is free time, so there is no guided walk inside Kronborg. The castle itself runs a 45-minute English tour called In Hamlet's Footsteps and free 15-minute introductions if you want live commentary on site.
Where does the royal castles and Helsingør tour meet?
At Hotel Astoria, Banegårdspladsen 4, next to Copenhagen Central Station. You choose the start time at checkout. The trip ends back at the same point after about 5 hours, and you should leave a WhatsApp number when booking so the operator can reach you.
What else is there to see in Helsingør?
Alongside Kronborg, the town offers the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, built around a former dry dock, and St Mary's Church from 1430. The cobbled lanes such as Brostræde run down to a working harbour, and the old shipyard hosts a street food market. The town celebrates 600 years as a market town in 2026, so the old centre rewards an unhurried walk.
